Choosing the right Keywords

More and more people each day are using the internet to find a product or service that they need and most of these people will use a search engine such as Google to find the vendor that they are looking for. So you need to make sure that you are on the front page for the right key words for your business.

Things to think about:

  • Get your website onto the first 2 pages of a relevant Google search
  • Short phrases tend to be searched more often and are more competitive
  • Its harder to get into the first 2 pages for the most popular searches

Picking the right Keywords

Picking the right keywords for your website is critical; as you don’t want your website to be found for something that your company does not do this will make users almost instantly exit your website. The longer the phrase the less chance there is of someone searching for that term, such as there are more people searching for web design Glasgow each day than web design company Glasgow.

Make a list of your top Keywords

It is best to start with a few keywords say 3-5 words that represent your company and services that you think people will use to try and find your company. You can use a keyword tool to find out how many people each month are searching for your words.

Google has its own keyword tool as part of adwords. This tool will let you check how many people search for each keyword term within a given period of time. If you don’t know how to find the tool or much about Google adwords then ask your web designer they will be able to get the stats for you.

Analysing the Results

This will really let you see what keywords are best for your business. Take note of the information from each of the keyword searches, when you have them all together it is easier to analyse them and see which keywords make the best sense for your company to focus on so that you can get ranked and found when people type in that keyword.

What to think about then analysing the results:

  • Score each term due to its relevance to your company
  • Score each term by number of searches

Put the Keywords onto your website

Now you should have the top keywords and phrases that your company website should be focused on. The next bit is usually the harder part getting ranked for your keywords and phrases on the first 2 pages of google.
